Welcome to the Managed Runtime Initiative
The Managed Runtime Initiative is an open development and integration initiative launched by Azul Systems with the aim of improving the execution of managed runtimes (.e.g. Java, Ruby, .Net) by enhancing interfaces and functionality across vertical components of the systems stack (e.g. managed runtime, OS kernel, hypervisor and hardware layer). The initiative will encompass multiple projects, some of which are based on free and open source software. We encourage contributions for managed runtimes, operating systems and kernel innovations which promote performance and scalability improvements.

Our goal is to prove new implementations and enhance interfaces across vertical components of the systems stack that improve managed runtimes on various operating systems and hypervisors. An initial contribution and reference implementation of an enhanced OpenJDK runtime on an enhanced Linux kernel is currently available. This release consists of an enhanced version of OpenJDK6 and a set of enhanced loadable Linux kernel objects. New enhancements and objects for other platforms and runtimes are made possible by contributions from the community.

The Initiative’s goal is to provide a multi-project site (composed of both closed and open source projects) that promotes innovations and extensions across the layered interfaces in the systems stack (i.e. from the managed runtime to the operating systems to the hypervisors and to the hardware). In addition, as new implementations for enhancing performance and scalability are developed and matured, it is the initiative’s goal to upstream those related contributions into existing and complementary OSS projects (e.g. kernel.org and openjdk.org).
Getting Reference Implementation
The initial source code release of the enhanced OpenJDK runtime for Linux is available today from the download page. Additional releases and patches are forthcoming.
